Just a lost soul swimming in a fish bowl

That sound familiar? If yes, hello there you crazy diamond. Now, I've heard a lot of songs. Memorized a ton too. But for some reason, this one line sticks with me always.

Just a lost soul, swimming in a fish bowl.
It draws quite a picture, doesn't it?

Now you might wonder who is this crazy person and man that fish is scary. I just wanted to write why this line resonated with me, and why I think of it at so many instances. I don't know if anyone will ever read this. And I don't really care. This is just a place for me to vent.

The Background

This might interest you. The song 'Wish you were here' was written for one of Pink Floyd's ex-member Syd Barrett. At the time he was struggling with drug abuse and had left the band. He was in a bad shape, physically and mentally. The song that became a hit later is a beautiful and sad ode to Syd.

With this nugget of information, I'm sure the first few lines of the song will make a lot more sense to you now.

What I think?

I won't get all Shakespearean or Platonian with you. Have a look at the scary fish. All alone, in a little round bowl of water. That bowl of water is its whole world, and it swims around in it aimlessly. It sees its life pass by. Year after year. Do you think the fish ever realizes that there's a whole wide world outside? I don't think so. It just swims on. There it meets another little lost soul in the dark. And together, they swim on.

I feel like a lost soul sometimes. Like life is passing me by, and I ain't doing anything significant with it. I have big dreams, and I wish to make an impact. But my world is so small. Just like the fish bowl. Sometimes, the magnanimity of the universe overwhelms me. I feel like a tiny speckle of dust in this humungous existence. And I know, there's a lot of fish in the bowl, just like me, looking for another lost soul seeking comfort. I hope we find each other.
